Capoliveri is an ancient castle fortified on a hill by the Pisani in the twelfth century ; the village was founded in the Etruscan-Roman age, in a strategic position from which it was possible to control the two seas on the south and west side. Through the streets of Capoliveri it is possible to breath a charming medieval atmosphere thanks to its well preserved architecture. The village owes its name to the Latin "Caput Liberum" "Free Hill" which dates back to Roman times.
Setted on a hill, this small town has grown in the heart of Elba’s mining area, between the two iron mines of Monte Calamita and Ginevro. From the panoramic position of Capoliveri that is located on the top of an isolated ridge, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the west watching Golfo Stella and Golfo di Lacona. The north-eastern side is dominated by an amazing view picturing the plain of Mola and the village of Porto Azzurro, under which Capoliveri was initially set until its independence in 1906.
The coasts of Capoliveri are among the most attractive of the island, with high cliffs, small bays and pure crystal water.
The old town center of Capoliveri has grown around Piazza Matteotti, from which starts the main street via Matteotti and over twenty more alleys ( called “chiassi “ by locals).
Along the two main streets of Via Roma and Via Ciro Menotti you can find many shops where to buy gifts and local crafts as well as delicious restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy the taste of the delightful food prepared by great Chefs.
On the eastern slope of the village, the sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie risesperched on beautiful scenic hills. Another one is located in Lacona named Madonna della neve, inside of which there are paintings attributed to the school of Raffaello. Nearby Capoliveri you can also visit the fascinating ruins of the Church of San Michele and the Fort Focardo that guards over the Gulf of Longone.
We recommend you to visit also Villa Foresi, in the middle of the Plain of Lacona. This estate actually belongs to a farm that offers delightful wine tasting tours. A breathtaking event to attend, if you're in the area at the right time, is the evocative celebration named festa dell' Innamorata, which happens on the 14th of July, as well as Festa dell'Uva (feast of Grapes), which takes place on the first October's weekend and festa del Cavatore.

Beaches from Capoliveri
The beaches of the Municipality of Capoliveri develop along the South-Eastern side of the island. The coast in front of Tuscany is highly marked by man's millenary mining activity.
The beaches in this area have a typical background strongly modelled by important terracing and characterized by the presence of old dismissed structures. Brown and red shades of the iron rocks dominate this trail of the coast; while the old remains of the iron have generated bright black beaches. One of the main morphological characteristic of the northern side is the deep bay of Mola, which goes on land in a vast alluvial plain, still used today for agriculture.
The Municipality of Capoliveri offers a wide range of beaches and coves, the most important of which is Lacona, a large sandy beach which is among the first three greatest beaches of Elba. Other important beaches are Lido di Capoliveri, Naregno, and those located around the promontory of Capoliveri.
More than 35 beaches of various type and morphological characteristics as well as size, spread along the coast. Some beaches are easy to access other ones can only be reached by sea.
At the base of the promontory of Capoliveri along the southern coast of Elba, there are many beaches and coves, among which we recommend the beach of Madonna delle Grazie in front of the sanctuary, followed by the beaches of Zuccale, Barabarca, Morcone, Pareti and beach dell'Innamorata.

Points of interest Capoliveri
In Capoliveri, we suggest you to visit the beautiful Piazza Matteotti and the Mineral Museum Alfeo Ricci located below the square. The parish church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the peculiar squares of Gitto and the one of Vantina.
The Pieve of San Michele is really close from the town center of Capoliveri;it was originally dedicated to the Saints Giovanni and Michele and built in the twelfth century at the times of the Marine Republic of Pisa. The Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie: a structure built during the sixteenth century preserves a painting of the Virgin Mary by Marcello Venusti.
The Fort Focardo islocated at the end of the plain of Mola and it is a massive solid castle built during the Spaniard's domination (1678) in order to defend Longone's square, together with Fort San Giacomo located at the other end of the gulf.
The Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve is located on the top of a hill in Lacona and overlooks the plain below. The Sanctuary was renovated in Baroque style around the sixteenth century, but it was surely built upon the foundations of a Romanesque church of the twelfth century.
Nearby Costa dei Gabbiani it is also worth visiting the mines of Ginevro, where you can learn the locals history. There are two main areas frequented by hikers, bikers, horse riders and trekkers: the area of Mount Calamita and Mount Tambone up on the Fonza promontory that links the beach of Laconella with the one of Fonza situated on the side of Campo nell'Elba. There are still many lovely paths for walks and outdoor sports, such as the trail which connects Capoliveri to Madonna delle Grazie.
Another interesting trail is the one that goes from the Madonnina (just below the village of Capoliveri), to the beach of Norsi. This is a short military link on the coast which extended from the beach of Innamorata to the one of Lacona until a couples of decades ago.
