The season of events on Elba Island is wide, ranging from amateur sports competitions in the disciplines of mountain biking, sailing and rowing with the rowing race from Elba, to the most demanding races valid for regional and Italian championships like Elba Man Triathlon. This event takes place each year in late September starting from the beach of Marina di Campo engaging more than 700 athletes from over 20 nations; the Ironman distance of swimming is 3.8 km, 180 km of cycling track and 42.2 km by run; the Half-Ironman distances are of 1.9 km swim, 94 km bike and 21.1km run.
For decades, Elba hosted both on land and sea sports events, even of international importance. In fact, the island is an ideal territory for outdoor sport events favored by the climate.
Every year Elba hosts the Walking Festival, which takes place in the 6 national parks of the Tuscan coast. In April, it is Elba's turn to organize the event, which has a program of more than fifty paths to discover led by experienced guides. Other events of sporty nature are the Legend Cup and the Granfondo, two mountain bike races that take place between the circuits of Costa dei Gabbiani and the Western Ring of Elba; in the past, the Rally of Elba took places also as part the European Rally circuit.
Among celebrations and food & wine festivals, a worthy note goes to the traditional Grape Festival that takes place the first weekend of October in Capoliveri, while in May, Marciana Marina attracts curious and enthusiasts to taste the specialties of Elba organizing the event Un Mare di Sapori (A Sea of Flavours). To not forget in December, also the Elba Chocolat Aleaticando, held in Marina di Campo which is about Elba pastry: many are the Christmas cakes prepared that go well with a bottle of D.O.C.G. Aleatico dell'Elba, a fortified wine which is the flagship of Elba wines. Autumn brings with it major events such as the Chestnut Festival which takes place in the villages of Marciana and Poggio. Other important gastronomic events are the Squid Feast that takes place in Marina di Campo in mid-November and the Wild Boar Festival which takes place in the village of Rio Marina in December.
A note should be made to remember the numerous folk and cultural festivals, as: the feast of May in Campo ; the Palio dei somari (run of donkeys) which is held in January on the beach of Marina di Campo; on July 14, the party of Innamorata on the beach of Capoliveri; and the feast of Cavatore which also takes places in Capoliveri.
In summer you can also participate to various patronal festivities, which end with a fireworks play. Dates to remember are August 7 San Gaetano in Marina di Campo, on August 12 for Santa Chiara in Marciana Marina and 16 August for San Rocco in Rio Marina.
If you come to visit Elba during Christmas holidays, there are very beautiful markets in Porto Azzurro, events along the streets of Marina di Campo and the beautiful Living Nativity that annually takes place in the heart of the borough of Marciana.
