Marciana is a small village sheltered behind Mount Capanne at about 375 metres above the sea level and it is entirely surrounded by a forest of chestnuts trees. From its main square it is possible to enjoy a stunning view of the village of Marciana Marina and of the nearby little village Poggio.
Marciana is one of the oldest and greatest municipality of Elba Island, as well as one of the most interesting for its archaeological and historic evidences to be discovered in the Archeological Museum in the Palazzo Pretorio in the section containing the remains from the prehistoric period to the roman times.
The village of Marciana features small alleys and fascinating corners that opens up to panoramic squares. The old side of the village is to be visited only by foot given the size of the alleys, which are very narrow. Marciana rises in the roman times in 35 B.C, but urban settlements only appeared during the Middle Ages; then the Appiani established there in a house that is still well preserved today and that can be visited.
The municipality of Marciana includes a wide coastal stretch, the north-western coast is mainly characterized by cliffs and precipices, along which we encounter many important beach resorts.
Among the most important beach resorts we suggest Sant’Andrea (with its sandy beach and granite cliffs), Patresi, Zanca and Colle d’Orano. In the past these locations were linked to the main village of Marciana only via narrow mule tracks which were crossing the valley characterized by cultivated terraces and vineyards. Today these tracks are very much appreciated by trekkers and bikers.
Other important and much enjoyed beach resorts are Chiessi and Pomonte, both born thanks to commercial exchanges with Corsica and to the agriculture once practiced on the nearby terraces. The villages situated in the western coast benefit from a breathtaking sunsets, picturing the sun setting down next the Corsica and Capraia islands.
In the middle of the island on the northern coast there are two important beach resorts belonging to the municipality of Marciana such as Spartaia and Procchio with its fully serviced beach and outdoors market every thursday morning.
Thursday outdoors market in Procchio from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Beaches from Marciana
The beaches of the Municipality of Marciana, so as the ones in the municipality of Marciana Marina, are located in the north-western side of Elba, where the shape of the coast is strongly characterized by the presence of the granite massif of the Mount Capanne and by high cliffs reaching the sea.
Enclosed within the vast municipality of Marciana there are many beaches and natural coves, many of which are wild and without services. Among the most famous beaches loved by the tourists, we recall the wide sandy and fully equipped beach of Procchio and the minor ones of Spartaia, Paolina, located in the north-western side of the island.
The small seaside locations developing along the coast offer beautiful coves and beaches from where it is possible to to enjoy a breathtaking view until sunset when the sun disappears in the sea. The municipality of Marciana is the greatest one of the Elba Island for its territory and for its coastal development. Its minor beaches, except the sandy one until the northern side such as the one of Procchio and Spartaia, are almost all composed by gravels and pebbles so as the beach of Pomonte, Chiessi and Patresi.
We suggest to visit the beach of Pomonte, where is possible to do snorkeling few metres away from the wreck of cargo Elviscot. Very beautiful and peculiar are the granite stretches of Sant’Andrea and its little sandy beach. Among the minor beaches and coves we recall the beach of Chiessi, Patresi, Cala le Felci, Pietre Albe, Campo lo Feno, Mortigiano, Punta Polveraia, Cala la Cotaccia, Cotoncello, La Cala, Redinoce and Guardiola.
