La Pila is a small village that belongs to the municipality of Campo nell'Elba, Elba Island in the province of Livorno in Tuscany. La Pila is approximately 2 km away from the centre of Marina di Campo and just over 1 km away from the big sandy beach of Marina di Campo. La Pila is also connected to the beach and the village of Marina di Campo through a cycling path.
La Pila is about 15 m above the sea level and is a quiet residential area, away from hustle and bustle, ideal to relax. La Pila is situated in a strategic location as it is in the middle of the of the greatest and most beautiful beaches of Elba, namely Marina di Campo and Procchio beaches.
In recent years, the population of La Pila has more than doubled, thanks to the new residential area which has caused the rise of the population from 200 to 500 residents.
In the village of La Pila there are various services, such as restaurants, pizzerias, newsstand, supermarket, car rental, scooter rental, bike rental, car wash, gas station and repair shop, airport, small football stadium and tennis courts.
In La Pila you will find different kind of accommodations such as apartments for rent, lovely Residences and Hotels with extensive green areas.
In the 50s there was once in La Pila a primary school for the children of La Pila and the surrounding villages.
In the village of La Pila there is the only airport of the Elba Island, a civil private airport 2km away from the tourist location of the village of Marina di Campo. Nevertheless as we mentioned earlier this is a quiet residential area as the airplanes are very small and their landings are not so frequent anyway.
The airport of the Elba Island "Teseo Tesei" is located in the area of La Pila at about 500m from the little village. The airport owes its birth to a German industrialist, who in 1963 bought the land directly from a farmer. His original intention was to open a textile factory, which had a direct air link with other industrial sectors. The original route was initially realized on the ground and measured 750 m. Later this project was abandoned and in 1966 this area was taken by Transair, which launched the first flight from the Elba Island the following year. Then in the 90’s the route got extended and asphalted, but in the following year it was taken from Elba Island. Today, the airport of La Pila connects the main national and international airports with Elba with scheduled flights in the summer season thanks to small airplanes that can transport no more than 50 people.
