Teseo Tesei

Teseo Tesei is born on 3 January 1909 in Marina di Campo. He was the last of the eight children of Ulisse Tesei and Rosa Carassale. The grandfather was the first Demeterio, folglicherweise then his father Ulysses, conducted a thriving business in South America. With a small fleet, composed of “schooner” and original habitat of editors, he transported elban wine overseas. This activity forced the family Tesei, most of the year to live in Florence. The childhood and youth of the small Teseo ran under which especially in the capital of Tuscany. At the beginning of the summer to escape from the heat of Florence, the large family moved in each case to Marina of Campo, where they had property and a farm.

It was in Campo, where Theseus was familiarity with the sea. For him it was the dearest item. Unfortunately, he had lost at only 6 years, his mother Rosa, and some years later, in 1919, his father Ulysses, who left behind his 8 children orphaned. It was his father, who shortly before his death, the small AN Teseo to General Fabio Mibelli confided. After five years of study at the Gymnasium at the Piarists of Florence, the young man came to his uncle at the naval academy at Livorno from which he entered in 1925 with only 16 years.

The study of the naval academy quickly showed the characteristics of the young man: very busy, with full character and a great intelligence. In the Academy, the friendships formed between the first comrades who exciting and dramatic moments shared with each other: Piccagli, Stefanini, Birindelli, Toschi, to name a few. His love of the sea made him the best sailor, and during the summer cruise on the ships of Navi School of Regia Marina, Teseo the best evidence of an excellent sailor. When he graduated the academy in 1929, a year later he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1931 in Napoli at the school “Ingegneria Navale e Meccanica”, he finished with the highest mark the doctorate. In 1934 he reached the diving certification at the dive school St. Bartholomew (Sp).

In 1936 it was in the 1 Submarine Float La Spezia chosen where he produced during leisure time, with his colleague Elios Toschi a weapon of war from a new composition, which he had thought or during the years at the Academy. He worked on perfektionisieren automatic respiration and underwater systems, and constructed the first prototype which was approved officially by the Navy.

In the same year (1936) he taken as lieutenant of the “Genio Navale” War of the Spanish. There he was honored for his work with a war medal and two crosses. In December 1936 he was promoted to captain. In early 1939 he was employed in the first fleet of speedboats for the secret training of the first team of the new weapons. These weapons were given the name of a Siluro Lenta Corsa (SLC). On entry into the war on the side of Hitler’s Germany, he knew that it was time to test his weapon on the field. Unfortunately, he had not previously the time to do various tests on the reliability of the “machine” to carry out what would have been a new “underwater weapon” absolutely necessary.

The high commander of R. Marina forced by the military necessity, decided to use the new weapon. The first results showed how it predictably, some of the strategic failures, which were due to the reliability of the first prototype. During the first mission they failed to break at the base of Alexandria of Egypt, he participated with the other companions at the Zürückeroberung of the sailors, who were kept in the hull of the submarine caught. Eight sailors were rescued after a long duration and number of dives. For his great altruism, he was promoted to major and was awarded the silver medal for military merit. Further experiments on the objectives of Alexandria and Gibraltar did not show the expected results, but were ultimately further refinement of the underwater resources.

An initial positive result was found with the destruction of “Bay of Suda,” but it was already thinking of other missions to Gibraltar and the base of Malta. In June 1941 he received the gold medal of the first Class of “useful work in the Marina R. awarded. Tesei succeeded in the planning of the Mission of Malta to integrate, as he began as a pioneer of the surface vessels of the two SLC. The task of the team Tesei-Pedretti, was the wire mesh to blow up the viaduct S. Elmo into the air to open the entrance to the great Harbour. Due to technical problems it was then delayed. In order not to jeopardize the success, however, decided Teseo Tesei set fire to its remaining cargo in total and thus to sacrifice himself and his faithful companion Alcide Pedretti. The emergence of this Explosition under the bridge S. Elmo led to the collapse of the metal of the bridge, which blocked the passage of surface vessels definitely. The enemy, equipped with brand new radar warning systems, had the situation from there on the open sea under control. Within a few minutes lost almost all members, because of the terrible battle of the enemy fire, life.

Only after the failed mission of Malta, where Tesei let his young life, began the first positive results of this new underwater Central show. The operation of Alexandria of Egypt, “where three SLC the destruction of two large British warships have been caused, justified the many losses of valuable men. By the end of the war, met the human stories which were invented by Teseo Tesei, their missions with success in the many hostile ports of the Mediterranean. In May 1942, the University of Padova gives Teseo Tesei an honorary doctorate for his services as a naval engineering and mechanics. For the story in Malta Teseo and his brave companions of the Regia Marina, received the gold medal for military merit.
