Description of Le Viste beach
The beach of Le Viste is located behind the old town of Portoferraio, which owns it administratively . The picturesque beach is dominated from behind by the sixteenth-century Medici fortifications of Fort Falcone. The expanse of water that washes the beach is part of the marine reserve that encompasses the entire Gulf of Le Ghiaie, therefore it is really popular among divers, who come to admire the wonderful flora and fauna of this marine area, especially near the islet of Scoglietto which stands in front of the beach. On the small sandy and pebbly shore you can find a bar and restaurant, which also will rent you sunbeds and umbrellas.
Access to the beach of Le Viste
The beach is within walking distance from the Napoleonic Villa dei Mulini (the emperor's winter residence) which dominates the small beach with the ancient defensive walls of the Fort Falcone. From the panoramic summit a downhill footpath leads you to the beach.
The same path was used by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who from his garden, along a narrow path reached a cave dug under the cliff, where he could cool off from the summer heat and enjoy a wonderful view .
