Created by Italo Bolano in 1964, the open air museum is found in the heart of Elba in the Etruscan and Napoleonic valley of San Martino. The 24 monuments by Elban artists live in harmony with 10,000 sq. mt. of typical Mediterranean plants. There is also a gallery exhibiting a collection of permanent artists. Italo Bolano was born in Portoferraio on Elba in 1936. He was an artist whose paintings went from figurative Expressionism to abstract Expressionism. He was a prolific artist and teacher of art. There are famous paintings surrounding the poetry of Mario Luzi and the life of Napoleon. He traveled through continents and cultures. He studied aesthetic solutions to urban spaces, particularly in Barcelona and Jerusalem. Currently, other than organizing personal exhibits and cultural events, he also produces monuments in various cities. His works are found in museums and private collections. On Elba, where he often stays, he has created many art works, amongst which is the Open-Air Museum (The Art Garden), in Portoferraio and the Museum of Sacred Art of the Church of S. Gaetano in Marina di Campo.
