ACQUARIUM OF ELBA ISLAND

The aquarium on Elba has to be, for both it's size and for the number of marine species found under its roof,one the most complete Mediterranean aquariums existing. It is the second largest structure in Italy after the Genoa Aquarium. With a total of 1000 square meters of covered space, it houses 60 tanks with more than 150,000 liters of water.

Privately built without any state funding, the result is very original, both architecturally as designed by Piero Tiberto, as well as the set up of the tanks. The placards are at once respectful of scientific knowledge, but are at the same time accessible to the layman.
There are currently over 150 different species of marine organisms, some of which are particularly rare or difficult to observe in captivity. The jewels in the crown for the aquarium are the Lampugas, large blue-green open water fish seen in no other aquarium. Numerous are the 30 or so different species of crustaceans and also various mollusks.
